Lehigh Valley College's Student Enterprise Group Receives $1000 Financial Literacy Grant

(Center Valley , April 13) - The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter at Lehigh Valley College has received an HSBC Financial Literacy Grant, earmarked for a program which develops better financial understanding among children. The grant proposal was selected from among 375 such proposals.

According to SIFE faculty advisor Larry Moyer, the SIFE chapter will use the $1000 grant for its Piggybank program to improve financial literacy among students at a local elementary school. SIFE members at the college have created a detailed plan to demonstrate free enterprise, encourage savings, and promote wise economic behavior among the children reached by the program.

College students in the program will meet with the children for half an hour each week. Elementary students taking part will assist in fundraisers, and savings bonds will be awarded to children who sell the most under the program. The project also enhances arithmetic skills among its young participants.

The grant is issued by SIFE World Headquarters in Springfield , Mo. , and its financial literacy funding partners, the HSBC Education Trust and the Corporate, Investment Banking, and Markets (CIBM) division of the HSBC Bank, both of which are based in the United Kingdom . The program is also supported by M&T Bank of Buffalo , N.Y. SIFE is an international business education association organized by Sam Walton, the late founder of Wal-Mart. Faculty advisor Moyer is a Sam Walton Fellow.

"Kids who take part in the program will learn how money is earned, and how earnings generate savings," Moyer said. "We believe it's an effective method for teaching the financial success skills every child will need."
